Petra , Jordan

The city of Petra, located in Jordan, although kept hidden over seventy -five percent of its buildings, has managed to arouse the enthusiasm of everyone since 1812, when Johann Ludwig Burckhardt identified it.

In 1985, the city became part of the UNESCO world heritage site, and in 1993, Jordan delimited part of the city as a national park. Numerous excavations which continue today are revealing a great network of canals, civil buildings, tombs, sculptures, ceramics and documents that reflect the splendor that had the city before disappearing into the seventh century, AD.

Since 1991, the Jordanian economy face one of its best moments thanks to the peace treaty signed with the state of Israel. As a result, tourism has increased to such an extent that currently in conserving its heritage gathered in the city of Petra. The financial contributions that are received for, almost entirely, to the improvement of infrastructure for the tourist sector Wadi, the city that has developed around the entrance to Petra.

Petra ‘s history dates back to the third century BC as the capital of the Nabataeans, which managed to stay as such until the first century AD. The city was part of the fabric of important trade routes of the caravans transporting incense, precious metals, herbs and bitumen from the Mediterranean Sea, as written by the historian greek, Diodorus Siculus, in the first century BC. Despite the attempts being made through archaeological excavations, to expose the history of this town, it is still impossible to set a uniform wire.

The city of Petra could not conceive without having mastered, by its inhabitants, the rain water, the most precious element of the surrounding desert. Thanks to recent excavations, it has managed to disinter the Siq, Petra access road as a corridor between the cliffs, and make it invisible from the outside. Through it will come to the city, leaving the entire system of hidden water.

The water system is made up dozens of dams, which in earlier times were the cool water,, reservoirs and as many tanks are open rock in the compact pinkish tones. The hydraulic driving is seated on a series of small canals that move water to the lower areas, leading to ducts sandstone carved with great delicacy.

All this impressive architectural complex of Petra is now in danger of deterioration, if the Jordanian authorities do not begin to establish appropriate rules to improve conservation.

The monastery has a fa├žade made up of three main streets and two-story broken by large Roman Corinthian columns, on smooth shafts. In it stands the top of the main street that is topped with a rounded building, breaking the pediment that would result from the union of the parties of rectangular section.
